  • The Guide is not a book based on advertisements. No place mentioned in the Guide had any idea that it would be included. We never accept favors as a result of including someone. Establishments and programs are listed because we like them or think you should know about them. Although the Guide is about enjoying food in Greenwich, you will note some selections are outside of Greenwich’s town limits. These easy-to-reach places complement our many in-town resources.

Many years ago, our first Guide was prepared for our real estate clients. Then the calls came in–their friends needed a copy. The owner of a local bookstore saw it and said we must publish it. That is where it started. Our initial reason for writing it has not changed. We know finding favorite spots takes awhile. We have lived in Greenwich for many years and we hope the resources in the Guide will help everyone moving into town feel right at home.

As the Guide grew, we decided that it was too large for one book. This is the first year we have divided the Guide into two parts. This first part, the FOOD GUIDE, is being released in 2013. We expect the second Part featuring shops and Greenwich activities to be released in 2014.

This edition, the Food Guide, has over 200 restaurant reviews. We visit each one anonymously at least twice before writing the review. We are looking at the whole experience: food, ambience and service. Restaurant reviewing is a professional responsibility. We have a great deal to do with a restaurant’s success or failure. We have extensive food and restaurant experience.

Carolyn is the author of The Complete Book of Homemade Ice Cream and several other cookbooks. For a number of years we owned and operated a small vineyard. Tasting foods and wines and knowing how they are prepared is greatly helpful in reviewing. Carolyn is a professional member of the American Society of Interior Designers. Before devoting full time to real estate, she designed restaurants. Many people remember the popular restaurant, Morgan, open for many years in Greenwich, which she designed. Knowing the requirements of good restaurant design is helpful in reviewing. We love discovering new “finds.” We hope our readers of the Guide will enjoy them, too.

    Carolyn and Jerry Anderson

At what age does one discover that the ordinary is extraordinary? For Jerry and Carolyn Anderson, it was when they returned to Greenwich. Jerry had been away at Harvard as an undergraduate, and then as a graduate at Columbia where he received his Masters in Business and Doctorate in Law. Carolyn had been at Boston University as an undergraduate and then at Columbia where she received her Masters. Jerry and Carolyn were introduced by a Greenwich friend, married, and in 1968 they bought their home on Clapboard Ridge Road in Greenwich. No other town was ever considered.

Anderson Guide to Food in Greenwich Connecticut: About the Authors

Jerry grew up in Deer Park and went to Brunswick. His youth was filled with sailing on the sound, playing tennis in the town tournaments and working on homework in the Greenwich Library. He learned to drive when Greenwich Avenue was a two way street and dance lessons still required white gloves for boys as well as girls.

Carolyn is the President of Anderson Associates, a real estate firm specializing in Greenwich residential properties. She is past president of The Greenwich Association of Realtors as well as past president of The Greenwich Multiple Listing Service. In 2011, she was inducted into the Greenwich Realtor Hall of Fame. Carolyn is a professional member of the American Society of Interior Designers. Prior to opening Anderson Associates, she designed and renovated many restaurants and residences in Greenwich. In her spare time, she writes cookbooks. Jerry and Carolyn rarely miss a new restaurant.

Their children, Clifford and Cheryl, were born in Greenwich Hospital. They thrived in the public school system, which launched them to successful academic achievements at Harvard and Princeton. Cheryl has her doctorate in Natural Medicine. Clifford has his doctorate in Theology. Cheryl and Clifford enjoyed the benefits of Greenwich’s many resources: water babies at the Y, scouting, running in town races, camping on Great Captain’s Island and visiting the wonderful exhibits at the Bruce Museum.

However, this book is not just the work of Carolyn and Jerry. It is the product of all of the Anderson Associates. The Anderson Associates are a diverse group. They are all ages and lifestyles, with one interest in common– Greenwich. They live in, work in and love Greenwich. Most grew up and went to school in Greenwich. Each in their own way has come to the realization that Greenwich is extraordinary.

    Amy Zeeve

Amy is Vice President of Anderson Associates. Amy was the inspiration for and the original author of most of the first edition of the Anderson Guide. She is an extremely well liked and admired professional in the real estate community. Because of the extraordinary real estate help she gives her clients, Amy is one of the few people we know whose clients regularly send her flowers.

Amy grew up in Colorado and graduated from the University of Colorado. She moved to Greenwich in 1993. Both Amy and her husband John live in and love Greenwich. They have two children, Charlie and Stephanie, who love Glenville Elementary School and Western Middle School. This active, young family helps keep the sections on youthful activities and shops current.

    Monica Collins

In her 18 years as a Realtor, Monica consistently receives accolades from her clients. Monica and her husband have enjoyed living in Greenwich for 28 years, raising their two sons. Monica has actively volunteered in the public school system and she has worked as a substitute teacher. Years filled with family outings on their boat, coaching and cheering baseball, swimming and hockey, and reading together at the Greenwich Library give her an inside view of life in Greenwich which she readily shares with her clients.

    Celia Fernandez

Celia has her BA in economics from St. Lawrence University and her MBA from Fordham University. Raised in Greenwich, Celia and her husband, also a Greenwich native, chose their hometown as the best place to raise their three children. Celia has served as President of the Glenville School PTA and the Western Middle School PTA. She is an active member of the Greenwich High School PTA. Ask her about Greenwich and you will discover a wealth of information. Celia’s understanding of the town, gives her clients a quick entry into being “insiders.”

Vanessa, a Greenwich resident for many years, created the drawings. She graduated from Greenwich High School, where she was one of their top art students and won awards at the Old Greenwich Art Society. Vanessa graduated magna cum laude from Connecticut College. She has studied art at Parsons School of Design, Silvermine, New York University, The Art Students League, The Chinese Academy of Fine Arts and Oxford University. She received her Masters Degree from the Rhode Island School of Design. Currently she is teaching art in California.

"Where do we want to eat tonight? The Anderson Guide with all the area restaurant reviews is our go-to book- better than Zagat. The Anderson critiques are consistent and we can count on them to tell it like it is."
    - Ned & Linda Cloonan
"Throw out your Zagats--the Anderson Guide to Food in Greenwich has everything and more about restaurants in Greenwich CT and environs. Experienced restaurant and food critics, Carolyn and Jerry Anderson, and other members of Anderson Associates, anonymously visit and review hundreds of restaurants, looking at the whole experience: food, ambience and service. The Guide contains no ads and no place mentioned had any idea it would be included. The Guide describes restaurants by cuisine, category and neighborhood. Although the food is of the utmost importance, good service is crucial. Discreet comments about noise levels are included when necessary. Tips on how to find a quiet area are given --maybe a table in the corner or outside if possible. A special section on pizzas is included, as are chapters on bakeries, chocolates, caterers, cooking schools, delicatessens, farms and home delivery, groceries and specialty food--and wine. Nothing has escaped the discerning eyes of the Anderson tteam."
    - Nancy Lucht

"Every Greenwich area resident who likes to eat, whether dining out or at home, has to have this guide next to their phone. In no nonsense detail, it critiques area restaurants not only for the quality of the food but also for service, ambiance, noise and a total dining experience. But, that is not all. Need a caterer, a child's party, speciality candy or ice cream, a bakery, a wine shop or some other food speciality, this guide categorizes and describes them. All entries have been sampled and tested by the Anderson team, people who like food."

Anderson Guide to Food in Greenwich Connecticut: Sample Review (Baang Cafe)

Just because they can’t hear you when you call in for a reservation and the wait staff has learned to lip read, doesn’t keep this noisy, lively, starkly modern restaurant from continuing to be highly popular. Opened in 1995, the young singles who loved dining here are now doing family takeouts. It is less noisy around 6:30, but the volume turns up steadily through the evening as the new younger crowd arrives. Some of our favorites are the rare tuna, crispy spinach, Chilean sea bass and grilled Shanghai beef. Appetizers are generous and meant to be shared. Save room for desserts like the banana nut spring rolls or the key lime coconut tart.
